I don’t remember the specific day I accepted Christ as my savior. For me, becoming a Christian was more of a process that started when I was about ten years old. However, by the time I was 15, my relationship with Christ was solidified. Being involved in activities that are surrounded by spiritual discipline has always been something I desired.

I was introduced to martial arts when I was enrolled in a local Tae Kwon Do academy at the age of twelve. It was there that I developed a respect for the many disciplines and benefits of martial arts. Although I only attended that particular school for a year, my appreciation for the art was so strong that I was compelled to continue my training at Dojos of the Risen Son several years later. I have now been a part of the Dojos of the Risen Son since 2013. Its unique blend of self-defense and biblical perspective makes this a refreshing environment.

Since joining this program, I have been encouraged to push myself beyond what I thought was possible, and I am humbled by the realization of how much more there is to learn. This school’s philosophy, where dedication is balanced with grace, and strength is balanced with humility, reflects the character of the people I train with. Not only does our class focus on the elements of physical defense, it also focuses on the biblical perspective of spiritual defense. I have been inspired by the integrity of the leadership in this school, and the more time I spend with these individuals, the more I feel we have become a family, not just training partners.

People join martial arts for a variety of reasons. Whether it’s to build confidence, learn defense techniques, overcome physical and mental obstacles, or simply to gain a better understanding of the art, my desire is to help them reach their goals, while still emphasizing the importance of the biblical application of our school. I love to see how people are impacted individually by this sport.

Proverbs 3:5-6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”  This verse has been useful in many parts of my personal life. It reminds me that although we don’t know all of God’s plans, or how challenging our paths might become, we can trust that they will lead straight towards his will if our focus remains on him. For me, Dojos of the Risen Son has bridged the gap between a solid martial arts program and Christian fellowship. I am grateful to be a part of this school.
